Friday, July 11th, 2008

in the interests of trying [?] to make a portfolio so that i can apply for a job for ride @ k2, i decided to try and make some shit for today. hopefully i’ll be able to make a thing a day or something. might as well…

had the outline of a doodle sitting around, with nothing much to do with it. this is certainly nothing special… just a manipulation of different textures… good to get the brain working in that direction again, though.

airlines fighting big oil? what’s next?

a letter i got from united today:

An open letter to all airline customers

============================================================

Dear Vivian Hua,

Last week, crude oil hit an all-time high of $146, and the skyrocketing cost of fuel is impacting our customers, our employees, the communities we serve, and the economy as a whole. United, and the majority of other major U.S.
airlines, are asking our most loyal customers to join us in pushing for legislation to add more transparency and disclosure in the oil markets. Please see the attached open letter from the leaders of the U.S. airline industry.

————————————————————
An Open letter to All Airline Customers:
————————————————————
Our country is facing a possible sharp economic downturn because of skyrocketing oil and fuel prices, but by pulling together, we can all do something to help now.

For airlines, ultra-expensive fuel means thousands of lost jobs and severe reductions in air service to both large and small communities. To the broader economy, oil prices mean slower activity and widespread economic pain.
This pain can be alleviated, and that is why we are taking the extraordinary step of writing this joint letter to our customers. Since high oil prices are partly a response to normal market forces, the nation needs to focus on increased energy supplies and conservation. However, there is another side to this story because normal market forces are being dangerously amplified by poorly regulated market speculation.

Twenty years ago, 21 percent of oil contracts were purchased by speculators who trade oil on paper with no intention of ever taking delivery. Today, oil speculators purchase 66 percent of all oil futures contracts, and that reflects just the transactions that are known. Speculators buy up large amounts of oil and then sell it to each other again and again. A barrel of oil may trade 20-plus times before it is delivered and used; the price goes up with each trade and consumers pick up the final tab. Some market experts estimate that current prices reflect as much as $30 to $60 per barrel in unnecessary speculative costs.

Over seventy years ago, Congress established regulations to control excessive, largely unchecked market speculation and manipulation. However, over the past two decades, these regulatory limits have been weakened or removed. We believe that restoring and enforcing these limits, along with several other modest measures, will provide more disclosure, transparency and sound market oversight. Together, these reforms will help cool the over-heated oil market and permit the economy to prosper.

The nation needs to pull together to reform the oil markets and solve this growing problem.

We need your help. Get more information and contact Congress by visiting StopOilSpeculationNow.com.

jobless.

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

come this friday, the 11th, i’ll be officially out of a job. fucking a. i’m not usually so worried about money because it always works out even when i’m just doing freelance crap but for this month — because i like to pay off my credit card bills 100% and not be in debt forever — it doesn’t seem like it’ll be working out. it better work out. i applied for unemployment since we (summer and i) got laid off due to trendi’s lack of money. well well. so. if you know anyone looking for freelance or contract designers, hit me up. until then, i will be nervously pondering about my near future courses of action *__*

on another note, i’m going to spain and ireland in september, and fuck, since i don’t have a job now, i’d might as well just stay in spain forever, right? AND go to burning man?! too bad all of that shit costs money… lots of money…

gay ol’ weekend.

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

a little late of a post but this past weekend was very gay. friday evening resulted in going over to someone’s apartment in capitol hill… didn’t do too much, just sat around and watched people get drunk, really. after that we went to r place (confusing because they would change between saying “our place” and “r place”), a gay bar on pike. was forced to “dance” for a little but i don’t consider the way people dance (bobbing around) to really be dancing at all. like, at a drum n’ bass show that’d certainly never qualify for dancing. that’s why i think it’s funny that people give you such a hard time for not dancing at a hip-hop / top 40s club, but come on. they’re not really dancing anyway.

i’ll tell you who was bobbing but dancing more than anyone — alex! alex asked some girl to teach him to dance and she said no, and said, “but my friend will teach you!” and then shoved him towards this tall gay guy.

evidently the guy asked alex if he had a girlfriend, if he had a boyfriend, if he was gay — and alex said no to all of those things, so the guy said something like, “well, loosen up, and let me know if i’m making you uncomfortable!”

cute.

saturday, went over to chol and jennie’s as it was chol’s surprise birthday party. saw lotta people — josh, seungbum, andrea, derek, esther, etc. etc. as usual, caught up a lot on old times. we failed to really surprise him haha. we all were slow and barely screamed “surprise!” personally, i was stuck behind the couch and couldn’t get untangled in time lolol.

jennie and grace made a tonna food and mmmm. oh yes and this weekend was the time i found out that… DIABLO 3 IS COMING OUT SOON!!!!!!!!!! HOLLAAAAAR. looks amazery.

on sunday, dragged lenny and alex with me to the seattle center (after eating at sushiland in queen anne) for pride. missed the pride parade, but the celebration at seattle center we did not miss. man. i know for a fact that not all gay people are hypersexual but the fountain in seattle center was chlorinated and people were prancing around in it and one lady was topless dancing around and at some point being sandwiched by like 5 other people. just kinda grody. and then you had the occasional tourist who’d pass by, probably thinking, “WTF IS WRONG WITH SEATTLE?”

played “talk to us” for a bit. details on that to come, in the next post!
